Kim Jung-Ju, the founder of the South Korean gaming firm Nexon, has sadly died. Popularly known as Jay Kim, the founder was 54 at the time of his death. The heartbreaking news was shared by the firm in a press conference on February 28. Nexon’s CEO, Owen Mahoney, stated that it is difficult to express the tragedy of losing their friend and mentor. Owen addressed him as a person who had an immeasurably positive impact on the world. It was added that Kim will be deeply missed by his Nexon family and many friends.
The Korea Herald took to Twitter to share Kim Jung-Ju’s death news. As per reports, Kim Jung passed away in Hawaii on Monday at the age of 54. Apart from confirming his death news, no statement revealed his cause of death. However, it is coming forward that the founder was battling depression for quite some time. Nexon’s statement to Korean Times stated that his depression seemed to have worsened recently. It also points to the possibility of the 54-year-old taking his own life. Nevertheless, nothing is confirmed at this moment.
According to a Forbes report, Jung-Ju was the third-richest person in South Korea in 2021. In his final moments, Kim had an estimated net worth of $10.9 billion. Reportedly, Kim founded Nexon in 1994, and due to his hard work and dedication, the firm went on to become a multi-billion dollar firm worth $13 billion as of 2019. Apart from founding South Korean gaming, Kim was also pursuing his doctorate in computer science engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).
After the game developing giant’s premiere, the firm released Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds, the world’s first graphic massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Besides, Nexon’s other games also include KartRider and MapleStory. It was just last year when Jung-Ju resigned as the CEO of NXC Corp. To add, it owns around 47% of Nexon. Kim Jung had served the position for 16 years. Lee Jae Kyo replaced him and is now serving as a director of Nexon Foundation.
In 2016, Kim Jung had quit the Nexon board of directors. He had been incredibly philanthropic with several donations made to children’s hospitals. In 2018, Kim had launched Nexon Foundation. Reportedly, he had pledged to donate around 93 million dollars to build children’s hospitals and for funding startups. He is survived by Jung-Hyun Yoo, his wife, and their two daughters.
