In a press release on Saturday, (19th February 2022), Capt, Phil Simpson, the task force commander stated 15 men were apprehended on Thursday and Friday nights after arranging to pay for s*x via an app. When the men arrived at an agreed-upon location, they spoke with an undercover officer, as stated by Simpson. Pope was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail on Thursday and released after posting $1,000 bail.
The authorities have not issued the names of other men. Simpson stated all of the men are charged with a felony count of soliciting prostitution, however, some face additional misdemeanor charges. Simpson stated in a press release that “If buyers were not looking for commercial se*ual services, s*x trafficking would no longer be profitable. We hope these operations target purchasers view that we take this very seriously. Our goal is to prevent future exploitation of human trafficking sufferers who are forced or coerced into prostitution.”

Pope had held the position since the month of May 2020. He previously worked for the university as a clinical assistant professor in the higher education administration program, as per a press release declaring his appointment.
On Friday, 18th February 2022, University of Alabama President Stuart Bell declared the resignation of Pope from the University. Pope served as director of recruitment programs/alternative certification from the year 1997 to 2000. In the year 1992, Pope was a walk-on member of the Crimson Tide football team that beat Miami to win the national championship. He is a native of Sweet Water, a town located about 100 miles west of Montgomery which is in Marengo County.
