Markeith Loyd has been sentenced to death by a judge in the murder charge of Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton. The jury had recommended death and the judge announced the final decision on Thursday morning, March 3, 2022. The decision came months after Markeith was found guilty in November. The man was charged with murder along with aggravated assault and carjacking. After the final verdict roll out, Clayton’s family took a breath of relief. Debra Clayton’s sister Ashley Thomas said that the family is thanking God for the outcome. She said it is a relief and she is just thankful. Sheriff John Mina took to Twitter to share the happy news too. The sheriff shared the officer’s post and wrote that he is very pleased that judge Marques sentenced cop killer Loyd to death. John Mina added that the killer had caused so much suffering to the families of Lt Debra Clayton, Sade Dixon, and DFC Norm Lewis.

Apart from the sheriff, the Orlando Police Department said that although nothing can undo the heartache created by the defendant’s heinous actions. The Orlando department further said that the decision brings solace to the community knowing a dangerous murderer will face the highest penalty provided by law. The department stated that though the case has gotten its closure, they will never forget Debra’s sacrifice to the Orlando Police Department and the City of Orlando.

For those unversed, a jury found Loyd guilty of murdering Clayton during a manhunt that had started after the man shot his ex-girlfriend to death and her unborn child in December 2016. The man was on the run in January 2017 after killing Clayton. As per reports, Clayton was trying to confront him outside a Walmart when he shot her dead. Although, the man was arrested days later. After Loyd got sentenced to death by the judge, he lashed out verbally. It was informed by the attorney on Thursday.

In October 2019, Loyd was convicted under multiple charges in the killing of his pregnant former girlfriend named Sade Dixon. Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon said that nothing can remove the heartache created by the defendant’s heinous actions.
