The late civil rights pioneer Viola Desmond’s youngest sister Wanda Robson has sadly passed away at the age of 95. The author’s death was confirmed by her husband Joe Robson who stated that she died on Sunday, February 6, 2022, in Cape Breton. After the saddening news was announced, social media flooded with heartfelt posts and tributes. Wanda Robson’s death cause also started to get searched on the internet. The Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau took to Twitter to console the well-known author’s death. The PM wrote that Wanda helped make Canada better and fairer as an author, activist, and advocate by raising awareness for her sister’s contributions to Canadian civil rights. Justin added that the 95-year-old has left behind an extraordinary legacy and went on to share his thoughts with all who are mourning her passing.

Who Was Wanda Robson?

The Delmore Buddy Daye Learning Institue in Halifax also expressed its sadness on the loss of a beautiful soul and a powerful mind in a post on Twitter. The institute wrote that Robson had a special relationship with the institute and it added just like her sister Viola, her legacy will live on. The learning institute addresses African Nova Scotia educational issues. Wanda Robson’s husband Joe Robson echoed the sentiment saying he wanted people to know his wide was always eager to offer her help to others.

Joe said whether you were a two-or three-year-old, or an 80- or 90-year-old, you got the same response from her in terms of her interest in who you were. It is no doubt that Wanda’s death has affected many. Activist Wanda Robson played a pivotal role in boosting public awareness of her sister’s civil rights legacy in Canada. Wanda lived in North Sydney, N.S and travelled across Nova Scotia and other parts of the country to give talks about Desmond.

Robson was also named to the Order of Nova Scotia in December as a “pillar of the African Nova Scotian Community”. Further, in 2004, Wanda received her art degree from Cape Breton University. She was 77 when she gained her bachelor’s degree. In 2010, Wanda wrote a book under the title “Sister to Courage” which included stories and experiences from her life. Wanda’s sister Viola Desmond had died in 1965.
