“Everyone talks about wanting more diversity. But me, I’ll do it!” Heidi Klum in the first Concentrated of the 17th season of GNTM on Thursday night. A total of 31 women compete for the title. In 2018, “GNTM” broke more than ever the dimensions of the classic model: the candidates were small, large, tattooed, young and old. For the first time, the mother-daughter duo also began.
And the older candidates immediately proved that their experience was useful for talent shows. Austrian Martina, 50, and Leselotte, 66, competed with her 18-year-old daughter Lou-Anne. Barbara, 68, is the oldest candidate who has participated in “GNTM”. All three advance to the next round.
People with experience are successful. There are many positive comments on social networks. “Only one episode but you two have already won my heart,” one Twitter user wrote to Barbara and Lizellot. “My idol now,” congratulated another. Wishing the two women went further, another user crossed their fingers: “Gee, diversity is flying as fast as last year’s deaf girls.”
The scene of the participants was colorful. What makes Heidi Klum proud is also appreciated by viewers on social media. Broadcaster Pro Sieben tweeted a screenshot showing #GNTM, #Heidi and #Barbara trending on Twitter. “We love this. #GNTM #Heidi and #Barbara are in the top three trends in Germany,” the tweet read.
Diversity is also evident elsewhere. A Twitter user filmed a scene in which the taller candidate Wiebke (22, 1.95 m) was walking with the shorter participant Kashmira (20, 1.54 m).
He singled out one candidate in particular: Viola, 21. Sporting a striking look with pink hair, large glasses and large earrings, she introduced herself to a visibly emotional Heidi Klum. “If you press ‘random’ when creating your character in the game,” one user commented on the 21-year-old’s appearance. On the other hand, “there is only one logical explanation,” she wrote of Viola’s edited photo with satirist Jan Bommelmann, alluding to rumors that Bommelmann smuggled her out.
Like every year, at least one candidate was polarized with her character. On Twitter, users discovered this participant: Sophie, 23. However, her open and communicative nature was not well received by many. “I don’t like Sophie anymore,” one user wrote. “Please reduce Sophie’s broadcast time,” demanded another.
Meanwhile, when Heidi Klum announced that Sophie was allowed to do her first fashion show, her name went viral on Twitter. “How do you know Twitter doesn’t like Sophie?” commented one user.
However, other users did not see the selection of candidates as diverse. According to some viewers, this year there are too many models with blonde hair. “Giant diver of the season. All shades of blonde available!” sarcastically scolded one user.
